The GLIAS Database

Use of Cookies on the GLIAS Website

The vast majority of GLIAS web pages do not use any cookies. The only pages which use cookies are the Site Information pages, which display aerial views and Ordnance Survey maps to pinpoint individual sites from the GLIAS Database. These are third party cookies placed by Google and the Ordnance Survey. GLIAS does not create and store any cookies of its own on your computer.

What are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are saved on your computer when you view certain web pages. Cookies are used for a wide variety of purposes, e.g. to personalise web pages, to enable online shopping to work correctly, or to monitor how many people use a website and collect information about them.

You can tell your browser not to accept cookies if you wish, though this may mean some websites won't work properly. You'll find instructions on how to control cookies on the AboutCookies website or you can view your browser's online Help. As far as we can tell, the maps and aerial views on the GLIAS website will continue to work properly if you tell your browser not to accept cookies.

Use of Cookies on this Website

The Site Information pages of the GLIAS website make use of mapping tools provided by Ordnance Survey and aerial photography tools provided by Google Maps. When you view the maps/aerials on these pages, cookies will be stored on your computer unless your browser is set to decline cookies.

If you click View Records (in the menu on the left) you will see a list of boroughs on the left of the screen. Clicking a borough will display a list of database sites for that borough. Most of these sites include a grid reference, which you can click to view a map and aerial view showing the site. Cookies will only be stored on your computer if you click one of these grid reference links (see illustration below).

You will also find aerial views from Google on the section of the website devoted to GLIAS visits to the Stratford Area in 2005/2006. (click View Images in the menu on the left). These aerial views will not store cookies on your computer as they use the latest version of Google Maps, which does not store cookies. The older version of Google Maps used on the Site Information pages will be updated in due course
